See this link for some definitions:

It's has been discussed before. If you do a search, there will be other links in SOFT.

But quickly...

You need to think in terms of controllers and sound sources. Sound sources produces the sound. It can be a keyboard, sound module or a notebook with specialised software. While the source produces the sound, you need a controller to tell the sound source to make the sound. The controller can be the SAME keyboard the sound source is coming from (ie a synth) or a different keyboard. The way they talk (ie their language) is midi. If the sound source and the controller is the same keyboard (ie a synth), you don't need any wiring since everything is under the hood. If the controller and the sound source are different, you connect via midi cables.

Also, since anything that can control is a controller, computers sometimes function as a means to control other equipment, i.e. they transmit midi information to a source which plays it. You can pre record music phrases into it. Computers become sequencers.

Or since anything that can make a sound is a sound source, computers can also function as a sound source. So you connect the controller keyboard to the computer and trigger sounds off the computer.

Depends on the genre of music you are writing for. They are basically grouped into 2 broad categories - softsynths and softsamplers. Again, this has been discussed. Within each category, it splits further into different types depending on how the sound is produced and/or synthesized.
