Dear softies,

Recently, I created a carousell account to supplement my soft posts (trying to sell my guitar away/trade for a strat style guitar). While my unpleasant experience stated below happened on carousell, I fear that it might happen to softies. Do read on to understand why.

I encountered this user David (@Img1999) who claimed to be selling a black Squier 70s vintage Stratocaster brand new at $398. I decided to contact him to enquire if he was willing to trade his squier for my ESP ec1000 with a $550 top up on his side. (I had purchased it from davis for $1.3k, but had decided on a negotiable 2nd hand value of $950).

David rejected my offer and insisted on a 1 – 1 trade. He claimed that his guitar cost about $700 dollars new (which contradicted whatever he had established in his post on carousell). He sent me a musiciansfriend link for my ec1000, and claimed that my ec1000 cost 980 at his “warehouse”. In the process, he claimed that Davis Guitar was overcharging. He also concluded that the markup margin between our guitars was negligible (Which is ridiculous. Even if he was right about the prices, the difference would’ve been 280 dollars, which is pretty hefty).

I then proceeded to check up the 70s vintage squier on musiciansfriend and was shocked to see a retail price of $330+, cheaper than that on his carousell post! When I pointed this out to him, he tried smoking some random reasons (refer to chat logs below) to carry out the 1 – 1. I knew these reasons were baseless because whatever had applied to his squier had to apply to my ec1000, assuming that this David is a legitimate dealer who imports from musiciansfriend. The squier cost $330 on musiciansfriend, and if some administrative charges had caused the cost of his guitar to more than double to $700, surely the same should’ve happened to the ec1000s he had “imported”? But nope, $980 he claims.

(If you look at his posts on Carousell, one user actually points out that SV guitars sells another guitar he is selling at a cheaper price. I leave it to you softies/carousell users to decide if he is overpricing guitars.)

I decided to give David an ultimatum. $700 dollars top up on his side. (ec1000 costs $1.1k on musiciansfriend, squier costs $330+. Pretty decent, no?) I also made it clear to him that I would expose his attempt to scam me on soft and carousell (albeit a little personally, I apologise for that but I felt that he deserved it.) I also pointed out to David that it made no sense to claim that his squier import cost him $700 when he posted it as “brand new” on carousell for 398 dollars (negative profit margin here). This guy seriously has to learn his math if he wants to lie or scam me.

I apologise if I was too personal/sarcastic in my conversation with David, but I really felt annoyed that he was blatantly lying in my face. I hope that no softies/carousell users have experienced the same thing, and I urge all users to stay sharp when dealing with David on carousell and, possibly, Soft. Given his huge collection on carousell, I feel that he might have a soft account too to improve sales promotions. While I feel that he was trying to scam me, I cannot generalise him as a scammer. It’s up to you guys to decide!

Thank you for reading up to this point, and have a good night! :p

26/5/14 9:16:25 pm: wenwei: Lol.

26/5/14 9:16:31 pm: wenwei: Here's my advice

26/5/14 9:16:41 pm: wenwei: Learn to lie properly, and take some math lessons

26/5/14 9:19:31 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: You wasting my time n know nothing on value of guitar. Go study more n come back to shop.

26/5/14 9:19:48 pm: wenwei: Haha

26/5/14 9:19:58 pm: wenwei: You post on carousell and say it's brand new at 398

26/5/14 9:20:07 pm: wenwei: You claim that you had to get it at 700

26/5/14 9:20:26 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: You can find end user but not me

26/5/14 9:20:31 pm: wenwei: That doesn't make sense already. Your profit margin is negative.

26/5/14 9:20:57 pm: wenwei: End user? Haha wow

26/5/14 9:21:01 pm: wenwei: That's nice

26/5/14 9:21:03 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: You price can't attractive me as in I'm supplier. Not user

26/5/14 9:21:25 pm: wenwei: Yea sure, supplier who lies

26/5/14 9:21:30 pm: wenwei: Very nice

26/5/14 9:21:35 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: Ppl who deal with me well know me. You have no chance

26/5/14 9:21:44 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: I won't deal with you definitely

26/5/14 9:21:59 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: Don't be wasting my time

26/5/14 9:22:01 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: Period

26/5/14 9:22:46 pm: wenwei: Yup. So here's what you should learn to salvage this time wasting situation.

26/5/14 9:23:22 pm: wenwei: 1. Learn your math. Enrol yourself in primary school.
2. Learn to spell properly.
3. Learn to lie before you try lying

26/5/14 9:23:45 pm: wenwei: Maybe that's why you're stuck with selling guitars in an indecent, dishonest manner.

26/5/14 9:31:15 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: Stupid really

26/5/14 9:31:26 pm: wenwei: Hey don't talk to me when you haven't gone to school!

26/5/14 9:31:30 pm: wenwei: 😊

26/5/14 9:43:17 pm: ‪+65*8500*3383‬: I Didn't ask you trades or buy. Didn't agreed deal with you anything. You can't n no right to commence in my stuff.

Thanks for tipoff with evidence. I do not get why someone who seems to be running a legitimate business would want to harm it like this. But im sure we do not have the full full story so let thread viewers reach their own conclusions.

On the side, I cannot be sure of this but i think SLMC is selling the VM series in the low 400s, though they are usually out of stock. Also I would suggest you censor both parties' telephone numbers and personal details in any photos you post here on soft, or anywhere online.

He may actually be a scammer, but threadstarter, you can always go for other sellers. why verbal wizardry with him? he won't go back to school aniway, lol

@ice yea bro I think I'll censor the numbers later on if I have the chance to, but whoever frequents his page will get his number too.

@ridethetiger haha I alr made it clear that I took it quite personally, but I'm not proud of it nonetheless. I just hope nobody else has encountered the same.

Nobody forces anyone to trade or buy... If you think the deal is ok then go ahead if not then dont deal... He doesnt owe you anything..ppl can post any price they want to sell and its their item... If you think its overprice or unreaseonable then dont deal simple as that.. No need to argue or involve in any negative conversation and post here... Unless the seller cheated you... Like selling a item not as advertised eg saying its original but actually fake or replica... Etc..you are the one offering trade and ask him to top up.. And he accept the trade with top up which you think isnt reasonable so you can just pass if the negotiation isnt in your favour... Are desperate to trade with that squier? Or desperate to get some cash from the trade? It seems you are the one desperate for it not him.... I have encounter many sellers buyers lowballers overpriced sellers and unreasonable dealers but i take it easy.. Dont like it just dont deal.... Whats the point posting it here? To let ppl know your personal dealing? It depends how bad you
Need money and how bad you want that guitar...im not really siding the seller or dealer but i just dont agree on you posting this personal dealing here... He didnt cheat you

@cbr400rrr
1. He did not accept a trade with top up. He insisted on a 1 to 1.

2. He overstated the price of his guitar by over an additional 100%, and lied a couple of times to do so while claiming he was legitimate.

3. I felt that he was TRYING to scam me, but that did not happen. Let me reiterate in case you are illiterate: I am not labelling him a scammer. It's up to you to decide.

4. I did not, at any one point, claim that this seller owed me anything. I own another burny les paul, thus the want to trade for a squier for diversification with some spare cash. There was no desperation. I realised he was lowballing, and I adjusted the top up price accordingly. He just continued lying so I passed in the end

I feel that it is only right to let others know if a seller is bloating his prices to up to 200%. But I am not labelling him a cheat or a scammer. Get your shit right.

He offer one on one trade and he didnt force you....you get your shit right frst ....so whats the big deal? You turn down the offer right? So?did you lose anything? So ppl would offer cash price different from trade price and depend whether if he really interested with guitar too... You are just illiterate and a person who couldnt let go.... Now you wanna find trouble with me is it?

Wen, is it really necessary to talk (well, type actually) like that?

And I don’t get the constant mention of education, literacy and going to school.

Not necessary to shoot the head off everyone who doesn’t agree with you. By posting here, you’ve opened yourself up to criticism. Some may see things differently, everybody has different opinions.

Mine is (I do agree with cbr400rrr) that nobody got cheated, even the intent to cheat was hardly evident. David ‘the supplier’ was perhaps unfair, but bottom line is he did not try to start the deal nor instigate the exchange.

This thread, I believe is no more than a ‘personal attack’; like what Icel3m0nt3a said, the personal data should be omitted. I hope somebody contacts David ‘the supplier’ so he’s aware.

Im voicing opinion and you could anwer back using nice words and phrasing... You dont talk the way you talk to the seller.... If you not happy can always pm.... No problem... Im not keyboard warrior....

I dont think the thread starter is directly attacking the "scammer" online. Maybe the messages are overboard and unnecessary but nothing really wrong about what he is sharing here. I agree that sellers have the right to put any price they want, but if they are willing to put this kind of ridiculous prices, be prepared to get ridiculous reponses from buyers.

I believe TS is just trying to share this so that people are aware of these kinds of deals on the online market. Judging by the way the seller talks about his guitars and how "convincing" he tries to sound, if i was new to guitar, i'd probably get taken advantage of.

Its just generally bad to have sellers like that on the market, no positive sides having these kind of sellers at all.

Chill out guys, peace ✌️

Innuendo,

I am not shooting anybody who opposes me down. I was pointing out misconceptions that the user had. (Eg that David had agreed to a top up, that I felt he owed me something etc)

Being unfair and dishonest to gain an unfair advantage in any situation is the very definition of 'cheating' and 'scamming'. At least to me I guess. Nevertheless, the point of my post was not to attack David in any way (I had my own fair share of personal attacks against him as shown by the chat logs, and doing so would make me a hypocrite), but to highlight the fact that David tried to blow up the price of his guitar by quite a lot, and that he might possibly do it to anyone.

I made it clear to David that I would highlight his dishonest intent to the soft/carousell community. I am sure that he knows.

Bro, I am sorry for talking in that tone. But it's really not nice to make baseless assumptions about me, or about how desperate I am.

Peace.

Does anybody know how to contact an admin to edit the original post? I am removing the handphone number involved, but I am unable to edit the post.

P/S : To admin and Mods : I strongly suggest this thread close before anything go to far and get personal.

Rock on yall...and all the best in your sales..!!!..
Cheers..

seriously? dont waste our time posting this kind of "experiences" here.
From a neutral point of view, I dont think he has scammed you.
He was selling his guitar, you offer your guitar to trade - he didnt show any interest in your guitar, thats why he "lowball" you in an indirect way, nothing wrong with that right?
I find it funny that you offer him an ultimatum of $700 top up when he is clearly not interested in your guitar. You are asking someone from selling his guitar to forking out $700 for your guitar?

Who is the one trying to shove the deal down the other person's throat? It seems more like you. If you think his offer price is too low for you then walk away lah, why you keep bugging him to top up for your guitar? Willing buyer willing seller. And worse still, you disintegrate the conversation into an insult hurling one. Somebody who tries to win an argument by belittling people's literacy do not deserve any respect or sympathy.
Not everyone is lucky enough to be educated as highly as you. And despite your "perceived" higher education than him, your immaturity showed through here.
The one that everyone should stay away from is you. Because you are an idiot who insults people when they can't agree with your view.

Wen, I may not agree with you, but I get your point. I’d rather not get into semantics, defintions and so on, over this.

If the thread title “Possible scam…” and the content peppered with ‘lie’, ‘scam’, ‘learn his math’ etc aren’t enough to make this seem like an attack, then I don’t know what does.

Best of luck with your sale of ESP ec1000, Wen.

precisely, if he is not a scammer, then why the need to post it on another platform to "expose"/"educate" others and be seen like a good guy here?

Simple.... If the seller put on ridicolous price then fine, at most he wouldnt be able to sell it for ages... You can all see here in soft guitars which not being able to sell for ages hahahahah... If they really desperate to sell then they will bring down the price

Best deal,

I think we cannot assume that he was 'lowballing' me as a sign of disinterest. I also did not claim that he has scammed me, so what's the issue here? I was not forcing him, it was a final offer. I took his continuing of the conversation as a sign of interest from the start.

I admit that I went all personal on him, and I had apologised for my immaturity more than once. I was insulted by the very fact that he was lying straight in my face, and hence lost my temperament.
