Nachtmystium: Assassins

There would be, time & again, proponents of a particular music genre straying from their forte. They dabble in the experimental, undergo miscreant morphing & engage in the unthinkable in search of elements anew.

If you were privy to Nachtmystium’s previous release, Instinct: Decay, you’d know how adequate these Americans are, treading on the black metal turf. In fact, the aforementioned release did receive a clement reception by the European legions. But Assassins here is a step away from the black but it’s not an entire renouncement of their roots; enter the Pink Floyd-esque Nachtmystium, if you please.

Ardent fans need not worry as Assassins is a black metal offering in whole but the band took a bold step in making things psychedelic & doom-like in every possible avenue. Yet another line-up refresh this time but the inclusion of drum wizard Tony Laureano (ex-NILE/ live Dimmu Borgir/ Angel Corpse…) is a statement of intent; the intensity of the music is here to stay. Assassins also showcases some fine guitar works by the recording line-up as well as guests musicians. The breather elements here allowed the band to include other guitar effects than the proverbial distortion & it’s an interesting melting pot from the start.

Is this another Dark Throne gone astray in the making? It’s an inevitable comparison but with all due respect, Nachtmystium perverted their music their way, they didn’t jump into any mutating bandwagon. Kvlt & troo black fiends need not bother.
