In Celebration of International Women's Day:
In celebration of International Women’s Day, this recital features the piano works of three twentieth-century women composers: Vítězslava Kaprálová, Ethel Bilsland and Florence Price. The programme begins by exploring the modernist manifestations of Czech identity in Kaprálová’s music. It then journeys through evocations of Edwardian English childhood in Bilsland’s miniatures, before reaching the rich blend of African-American folk songs and classical forms in Price’s compositions. Samantha Ege is the first pianist to have performed works by Kaprálová and Price in Singapore, and in this recital she gives Bilsland’s pieces their Singapore premiere. While Bilsland never visited Singapore, there is a fascinating connection (as the programme reveals) that brings this celebration of International Women’s Day full circle.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD run by the Suffragettes in 1911. IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organisation specific.

About the Artist:
Samantha Ege
Samantha teaches Music in Singapore and has been teaching internationally for a number of years. She is from England and shares Nigerian and Jamaican heritage. She studied Music at the University of Bristol and McGill University. McGill granted her the wonderful opportunity to study piano under Dr Luba Zuk. There, she cultivated a strong interest in repertoire by women composers that has continued to this day. She is now conducting her PhD in Music at the University of York where her research centres on Florence Price.
Samantha is keen to share with audiences works by women composers, especially as the 21st century can provide the platform that has traditionally been denied to women in the world of music. She believes that the past can be a matter of perspective, and the way in which we choose to engage with it in this modern day is truly a reflection of how far we have come. In Spring 2018, Samantha will be releasing an album with Wave Theory Records that spotlights the piano music of Florence Price, Ethel Bilsland, Vítězslava Kaprálová and Margaret Bonds.
