The N1's tone generator section features KORGs renowned AI2 Synthesis System, with a gigantic 18 Mbytes of PCM ROM.
The first 12 Mbytes are identical to the N5, covering everything from imitative acoustic instruments, synthetic waveforms and more.
The additional 6 Mybytes (found only in the N1) provides 35 new waveforms including a gorgeous stereo sampled piano, many new electric pianos, a second clavinet tone, more organs and even a vintage CP-80 piano! With a total of 563 multi-samples and 286 drum samples you have all the sounds you need at your fingertips.
In addition, the N1 has two completely independent stereo multi-effect units with 48 types of effects, so you can put the finishing touches on your sound.
The internal preset area contains 1,169 sound programs, and 302 combinations (N5 compatible). Each combination can bring together up to eight program sounds to create even richer timbres.
The user area contains 100 sound programs that take advantage of newly added waveforms, plus 100 combinations.
The N1 gives you a total of 1,269 programs and 402 combinations for unbelievable potential.
Not only is the 88-key, 64 voice N1 perfect for piano playing, but it is also an excellent live performance keyboard.
Like the N5, the N1 provides a powerful Performance mode that lets you express every bit of your musical potential.
The front panel provides four knobs for controlling VDA Attack / Release Times, VDF Cutoff, and Effect Dynamic Modulation, for intuitive, real-time control of basic aspects of the sound.
In addition to these four parameters, another 12 types of parameter (for a total of 16) can be freely selected for assignment to these knobs.
Along with Pitch Bend and modulation wheels the N1 has both velocity and aftertouch response from its weighted action keyboard. At the touch of a switch you can layer or split programs or combinations, change octave settings or control portamento.
All of these settings(including arpeggiator settings) can be stored in one of the 32 performance memories, allowing you to instantly select and play your desired settings in real time. A MIDI START/STOP switch is also provided for easy control of an external sequencer.
The N1 also provides an arpeggiator with 20 types of preset patterns which can be synchronized with an external sequencer. Since you can choose the area of the keyboard (Lower, Upper, All) which will play an arpeggio, you can do things like play an arpeggio in the Lower part of the keyboard while you play the melody or chords in the Upper part.
The N1 features a 144 x 40 pixel full-graphic backlit LCD with a that can be switched from amber to green. LFO waveforms, bar graphs, pan, level,keyboard diagrams and more are displayed visually.
This allows exceptionally easy sound editing. Plus, in the Performance mode sixteen types of icons provide instant visual confirmation of the functions of the N1's controller knobs.
The N1 provides GM, GS and XG-compatible sound maps, allowing it to play back all types of commercially available MIDI file data.The convenient, built-in PC interface connector lets you connect your computer with just a single cable (the separately sold AG-001B/002B is required).
With 32-part multi-timbrality the N1 can be used to create the most complex arrangements desired.
Programs or Combinations can be used on each of the 32 Parts for total freedom of arranging.
