Fong Kai De

16-year-old Fong Kai De started learning the piano at the age of 7, and the age of 10, he scored a Distinction in his ABRSM Grade 8 examination. The following year, at the age of 11, he gave his first solo recital in Singapore and Malaysia. At 14, he scored a Distinction in his LRSM dipoma examination. He was subsequently invited to perform at the ABRSM South and East Asia Diploma Awards Ceremony, an honour reserved for the highest scorers in the diploma examinations.

In July 2013, Kai De was the only Music Elective Programme student selected by his school, Temasek Junior College, to perform at the Esplanade Library during the Singapore Youth Festival Celebration. In the same year, he was one of five finalists in the Piano Intermediate Category of the National Piano and Violin Competition in Singapore.

In 2014, he received an Honourable Mention in the Junior category of the Golden Key Music Festival Debut International Piano Competition (U.S.A.).

As a performer, he has been invited by Steinway Gallery Singapore to perform at the Steinway All-Star Concert at the National Museum of Singapore, and was also invited by Keppel Reit to perform at the Ocean Financial Centre. Kai De was also asked to perform at the re-opening of Victoria Concert Hall.

As part of the Singapore’s 50th National Day celebration, Kai De was selected to perform Kelly Tang’s Concerto for 50 pianos and orchestra, alongside world-renowned pianist, Lang Lang.

In February this year, he clinched the Silver Prize at the 7th All Japan Junior Piano Concours held in Tokyo. During his academic break this past June, he participated in the John Perry Academy of Music Summer Festival in California, U.S.A.

Kai De just completed Year 4 of the Integrated Programme at Temasek Junior College. While he enjoys music from a variety of genres ranging from classical to electronic, he also has a strong interest in reading fiction.

Kai De is presently studying the piano with Benjamin Loh, and was formerly a student of the late Ong Lip Tat.
