Hi! I'm not a musician but...

Hi! I'm not a musician but...I love music!

I just finished a business degree in Music Administration in Los Angeles this year and having being away from home for so long, I want to know how the local scene is like now!

I think there is a lot of untapped potential in Singapore's music industry and I want to contribute from the business side~ It's not an easy place to be in but the challenges are what make it fun right? :D

Hey Linc

You are coming at just the right time. The Singapore music is on its raise. There is definitely a need for the business people to come in and take it further.

Theres a Music Matters happening currently at MBS, I hope you are there. ;)

I really wanted to go...but I am still in California at the moment. I will go next year if possible!

Oh cool! Thanks for letting me know. I can't attend it but I can definitely go check their site to see the bands :D

Hey Linc,

100 Bands Fest is happening in about a week or so. You oughta check it out: Shitloads of local acts playing~

Are there any demands/opportunities for Singapore music at where you are?

It's generally rather difficult for any foreign act to break in the US market. Radio airplay plays quite an important role in getting artists known in the US so if a song is not being played in US radio stations, the artist remains relatively unknown. For instance, Alan Walker who is topping charts almost everywhere in the world remains relatively unknown in the US because his songs are not being played on radio here. To go a little further back in history, Westlife whom I've been listening to since young is very much unheard of in the US because their songs were not often played on the radio back then.

However, I think Singapore artists have a lot of potential to make it in the US as a touring artist (provided they make good music of course). Singaporean artists do not have much of a language barrier and that makes it easier for them to get their music heard. Yes, music itself transcends language barriers and borders and all, but to promote the music, it is often necessary for artists to interact directly with fans through social media and it helps when language becomes less of an issue. Also collaborations with other US artists become easier as well~

Did you have prior experience in music business before doing your degree? It is quite a specialised course.

I kind of got into it by accident. When I was in the US, I worked as an Jap-Eng interpreter/assistant for some musicians from Japan at an event and somehow that got me really interested in the business.

Singapore Tourism Board (STB) partnered up with brands such as Lyft, an on-demand transportation service in the US; and Pandora, the music source for fans and artists, to drive awareness of Singapore in USA.

According to STB, it is working with “like-minded consumer to explore the travel experiences in Singapore”. STB also added that partnering with these companies is also aimed at supporting Singapore Airlines’ launch of non-stop flights between San Francisco and Singapore in October.

That is great! I don't live in San Francisco so I am not sure how it would look like, but Lyft is a common app so hopefully that gives more awareness to Singapore and Singapore music! I am glad that STB and other boards are making an effort to promote Singapore music. Definitely helps to get things moving.

Also Linying just got signed to Nettwerk Music Group! Nettwerk is a well-known label in the music industry and it's great that a Singaporean artist is getting signed! I would also like to note that this might not have happened if a fellow Singaporean wasn't working behind the scenes to make this happen! I hope this would allow other singer/songwriters to be more optimistic about pursuing this path
