This original Alvarez Yairi design has been very well received in the United States because of the distinctive ebony bridge, inlaid abalone "AY" signature on the black pick-guard and the brilliant abalone binding surrounding the body and the sound hole. The solid ebony fingerboard is also inlaid with abalone markers, and gleaming colourful abalone is inset into a specially moulded celluloid binding.
Heartwood Jacaranda Rosewood makes up the sides and the 3-piece back of the DY90. Sections of the back are separated by dividers of inlaid wood marquetry. The neck is made of mahogany, and contains an adjustable steel rod in a magnesium U-channel, which results in a slender neck of superior strength.
Solid Canadian spruce makes up the top of the top of the DY90. Parabolic top bracing is hand-carved and sanded to achieve the full basses and clear trebles inherent in this instrument. Internal lacquering adds to the acoustic advantages of the DY90.
